Frequently Asked Questions

your questions, mechelle's answers.

Q1: Why are you running for mayor now?

A1: Bulverde is at a crossroads. I’m stepping up to bring proactive, collaborative leadership that builds on where we’ve been—and stays focused on protecting what makes this town so special. We must protect our community’s character, respect our natural resources, and ensure that change happens with—not to—our residents.

Q2: What qualifies you to be mayor?

A2: I spent six years (2018-2024) serving on Bulverde City Council, gaining a deep understanding of our community’s needs, challenges, and priorities. My background in community health, strategic planning, and collaborative problem-solving has taught me to listen and listen more, then turn ideas into action by building on the good work already underway and ensuring that decisions are made with balance and long-term impact in mind.

Q3: How will you and the Council deal with ideas and concepts brought before you?

A3: Every proposal that reaches City Council must go through a formal due process, including staff review, public hearings, and recommendations from the Planning & Zoning Commission. This ensures that proposals are evaluated fairly, transparently, and with the community’s best interests at heart. As mayor, I’ll continue to support a process where every idea is measured against this standard: Is it good for Bulverde, and is it good for the people who live here? As mayor, I will uphold that process and stay focused on decisions that reflect the long-term needs of Bulverde—not just for today, but for the generations who will call this place home tomorrow.

Q4: What is your stance on new housing developments?

A4: New development should reflect Bulverde’s values—not reshape them. With the adoption of our community-led Comprehensive Plan 2050: A New Day, we now have a clear roadmap for protecting what matters most. I’m committed to making sure any future housing fits Bulverde’s character, doesn’t strain our roads, schools, or water systems, and respects the land and lifestyle we cherish. That means standing firm on responsible zoning, safeguarding our infrastructure, preserving our dark skies, and keeping all decisions rooted in the priorities residents have already made clear—putting Bulverde’s families and future first.

Q5: What will you do about flooding in our area?

A5: Flood mitigation is one of my top priorities—second only to water security. Bulverde ranks among the top towns in Texas for flash flooding, and we often swing from drought to dangerous downpours. As mayor, I will lead efforts to modernize our drainage systems with updated culverts, detention ponds, and smart infrastructure that can better manage storm water and protect our homes, roads, and families. I’ll also work closely with county, state, and federal partners to secure funding and implement long-term, watershed-based solutions that address runoff at its source. This isn’t just about planning—it’s about protecting lives and securing Bulverde’s future.

Q6: Traffic is getting out of control. What will you do about it?

A6: You’re right—our roads weren’t built for the traffic we’re seeing today, and it’s only getting worse. I’m committed to tackling this head-on. That means improving traffic flow, enhancing safety at key intersections, and working closely with TXDOT to move major projects forward. Infrastructure should serve the people—not lag behind them. With 28 years of experience in this region, I’ve built strong relationships that I’ll use to ensure Bulverde has a seat at the table—not just when plans are announced, but while they’re being shaped. Our community deserves a voice in the decisions that impact on our everyday lives.

Q7: Will you support expanding wastewater systems?

A7: Yes—but only in a thoughtful, community-guided way. Many residents value their septic systems, and I fully respect that. This isn’t about forcing change—it’s about making smart plans for areas where septic may not be feasible or sustainable over time. Strategically expanding the city’s wastewater system where appropriate allows us to reclaim water for reuse, protect our aquifer and wells, and strengthen long-term water security in our drought-prone region. Reclaimed water can be used for irrigating public green spaces and gathering areas—supporting a more resilient future without changing who we are.

Q8: What kind of development will you promote as mayor?

A8: I support development that aligns with our Comprehensive Plan 2050: A New Day and reflects Bulverde’s character—not projects that steamroll it. That means encouraging small businesses, family-friendly spaces, and thoughtful improvements that enhance The Village—our historic heart—with better walkability and gathering places. I'll advocate for local-scale projects that add value without contributing to sprawl, and ensure every proposal meets the infrastructure and quality standards already outlined in the plan. Growth should enhance our quality of life—not compromise it.

Q9: Are you in favor of big commercial or industrial developments?

A9: Only if they align with the vision and priorities outlined in our Comprehensive Plan 2050: A New Day—and only if they serve the real needs of our community. Every proposal must go through a clear, public review process and meet the high standards Bulverde expects. Bulverde is proud to be the Front Porch of the Hill Country and a Certified Scenic City. That identity is more than a tagline—it reflects the values, beauty, and rural character our residents cherish. We don’t need unchecked growth. We need the right kind of projects—those that add value without compromising our quality of life, straining our resources, or changing who we are. I’m for Bulverde—through and through—and every decision I make will reflect that.

Q10: What’s your take on rainwater collection and conservation?

A10: I’m a strong advocate for rainwater collection and serious water conservation efforts—especially now. With prolonged drought and declining levels in the Trinity Aquifer, more wells have begun to run dry across the area, pushing us to a critical point. Water is one of our most precious and threatened resources. Smart rainwater harvesting can ease pressure on the aquifer, support native landscaping, and help create a more resilient water future for Bulverde. As mayor, I’ll champion public education and local partnerships that empower both residents and businesses to adopt water-wise practices—and be part of a lasting solution to protect our resources and preserve our way of life.

Q11: What is your favorite pizza and ice cream?

A11: Pepperoni and pineapple — yes, I said it. Sweet, salty, a little unexpected… like the best ideas. And vanilla ice cream to cool things down after stirring the pot.
